Finding and entering sprint triathlons across New Zealand
The first thing that catches my eye is always the entry button. It sits there on the race page like it is simple, like it does not carry a whole morning of cold water and shaky legs. I scroll past the big hero photo of someone running with a grin, and I look for the small stuff. The date. The place name I half know. The little line that says “entries close” and suddenly it feels real.
New Zealand makes this part kind of exciting because the races are scattered around, not just in one big city. A sprint triathlon can be near a lake that looks calm but bites your ankles, or on a beach where the wind keeps messing with your goggles. Finding one starts with noticing what you can handle right now, then matching it to what is actually open for entries. Some events fill up early, some stay quiet until late, and you learn to check more than once.
Entering is not only typing your name into boxes. You choose a category, you tick rules you promise to follow, you decide if you want a t shirt even though you already have too many. Then there is the part where you double check your bike is allowed, and whether you need a Tri NZ membership or a one day licence. It sounds boring but it is also where nerves start turning into plans.
A small ending
After the entry goes through, everything looks different for a bit. The calendar has one bright circle on it now, and even an easy swim at the pool feels like it belongs to something bigger.
